Brown was the first-ever, first-year, first-time head coach in the history of the conference to lead his team to both the league's regular season and tournament titles and only the second first-year head coach to win a regular season title. For his efforts, he was named the Big West Coach of the Year.
A 1997 graduate of Cal State Fullerton with a degree in communications, Brown was a four-year letter winner as a defender for the Titans from 1992-94 and 1996, helping Fullerton to the semifinals of the 1993 College Cup. He was selected to the 1993 NCAA All-Tournament Team and was a two-time All-MPSF selection, finishing his career with four goals and three assists. Brown also competed in the 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival in St. Louis.
